Deborah Leighty is one of two Studies in Urban Ministries (SUM) students living at Urban Hope Philadelphia. Here’s her story:
I grew up in Bourbon, a small town in northern Indiana. I went to a church where my father was the pastor, New Wine Church. It is a non-denominational house church. I now attend Grace College, I am studying urban ministry, and now living in Philadelphia working with Urban Hope Church.
While studying there I have been able to connect with a number of the members of the church. Despite our vastly different backgrounds, I can relate with them and share God’s love. Through my experiences here God has shown me the great need that there is in the city. The time here has given me the opportunity to look into the lives of people and see their hurt and need for God. It has also provided me with opportunities to share the gospel with them. I enjoy this time spent in ministry because it provides wonderful training for my future in ministry.
The Studies in Urban Ministry program is a four month, real-world experience for college students. Visit sumstudies.org to find out more…
