Among today’s society, some churches give ideas to help reach and disciple people, while other churches are losing the Truth of the Word.
What has been labeled as “The Emergent Church” continues to be a growing topic of discussion because it contains both strengths and weaknesses.
The strengths of the Emergent Church movement are its courage in
- Standing against the shortcoming in many evangelical churches of today when they are not seeing genuine disciples from the church.
- Insisting that authentic relationships form the foundation of Christian community.
- Standing against the “easy believe-ism” that is not genuine conversion or the making of true disciples.
- Daring to believe that Christ longs for His bride to function with the health and wholeness He created her to enjoy, including compassion for the poor, justice and genuine love.
- Wanting to use teaching methodology that really communicates with people and helps them not just hear about the church, but be the church.
Believers and church leaders must always teach the “whole counsel of God.” Truth is the basis for our faith. While methods and trends change, we must never lose truth. While we want to be culturally relevant, if we “water down” the truth of the Word, we’ve lost the battle.
In this Fireside Dialogue, Dr. Mark Soto will discuss the Emergent Church.
Mark is a professor of Biblical studies at Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, Indiana. He has had 12 years of experience in the pastoral ministry as well as serving as a counselor for a Christian residential childcare facility.
Mark holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Theology degree from Appalachian Bible College and a Master of Arts in Religion from Liberty University. He also has a Master of Divinity, a Master of Theology and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Grace Theological Seminary.
