Now THAT's a Servant...

We are here at Operation Barnabas orientation in Lititz, PA. Things have been very, very busy, but going well. Students just found out what team they are on yesterday so everyone is beginning to settle in. There is a great spirit amongst the group and God is working in their lives.

Last evening, I got to speak during the Challenge Hour on the topic of Servanthood and we had a couple of incredible examples of that this past week. One of the ob gals had a huge hassle with the airlines in getting to the Baltimore-Washington airport. She was to be the last one to be picked up at the airport (two hours away from here) but the poor thing not only had her flight delayed, they then sent her to Norfolk, VA, and cancelled the other connecting flight. Then they planned to bus the travelers to BWI which is about a four hour drive away. But then they didn't have a bus and there was no transportation available until the next day. We thought she was stuck at the Norfolk Airport overnight. Young, alone, concerned, and maybe a little frightened (and that is only her response--not considering the anxiety on her mom and dad!)

Anyway, at 9 pm we called a former ob leader who lives 40 minutes away. Graciously, she volunteered to drive to the airport to let this young lady stay at her home that night and then take her back to the airport the next day. When she arrived at the Norfolk airport a bus WAS coming for the travelers. She spent time encouraging our late-arriving OBer and helped her to get on the bus.

Dr. Joy Spence Elliott is an example of a servant--not just in thought or in theory but in actual practice. She really is great and those are not my words. It's what Jesus says in Matthew 20:27: "If you want to be great, be a servant".

I'll brag on two other great ladies who are ob leaders this summer: Amy K and Stacie. They were glad to be able to drive to the airport at 1:30AM and get home with this young lady at 5:30 in the morning. Not for glory, recognition, or pay. Just to help.

Our ob teens are in for a good summer with these kinds of examples living before them. And to think that we are only four days into the ministry experience.

It's Here

June 1. Wow. It is hard to believe that we are to that point of the year again. This is when we start loading up Operation Barnabas equipment and have things stacked everywhere in our office. This year, while I am not leading a team, I do get to be involved with directing the leaders orientation and the student orientation. Things are coming together well.

Probably the best part of what I get to do is help teach young people what servant leadership is then work with other adults to help them practice this kind of lifestyle all summer long. For many--this isn't just a summer--but becomes a part of the way they will live life each and every day.

Probably one thing that is helping to reinforce (at least for me) what we are doing in ministry training is part of what was shared by four "alums" of our church youth group who spoke with the guys in the youth group the other week. Each of the four guys said they got excited about their personal relationship with God when they started sharing their faith. And they continue to do so.

Only a few more "free" days and then some important stuff starts to happen in, and for, through 91 teens and 16 adult leaders.
