CE Staff Member Goes To Jail...and We're Happy About It! |
Peggy Owens
|
Peggy Owens, CE National materials coordinator, is actively involved in the Kosciusko County Jail Ministry. She walked into the jail for the first time almost eight years ago. The chaplain, John Boren, asked Peggy to lead the worship music. “To hear the loud, clanging doors and see about 70 men in stripes was scary,” Peggy says.
At first she really missed going to her regular church, Winona Lake Grace Brethren, “but God tugged at my heart and gave me a real love for the inmates.” Although Peggy still misses the fellowship at WLGBC, she now considers herself a part of the inmates’ congregation. Read more... |

"No American community has had to face rebuilding
after a
catastrophe on the scale of Hurricane Katrina"
Gulfport Mayor Brent Warr
The University of Southern Mississippi, the site for this year’s Momentum youth conference (formerly Brethren National Youth Conference) was chosen for one sole purpose-to help with the re-building of the Gulf Coast after Katrina. So this year, Momentum will include familiar things such as great speakers, excellent worship music, in-depth teaching with Power Trax and seminars, daily outreach, NAC and Bible Quizzing events, Operation Barnabas programs, and a huge Hattiesburg Blitz on the beautiful University of Southern Mississippi campus.
But, we have given the week’s schedule an extreme makeover to include some very new things. Momentum will mobilize 500 people a day to Gulfport, Mississippi, to do Katrina restoration projects. Read more...

April Days Away Began Yesterday! |
By the end of today, a total of 200 people will have attended the Rhodes Grove, Pennsylvania and the Wooster, Ohio, Days Away North of 55. The Rhodes Grove group enjoyed Dr. John Whitcomb yesterday. The Wooster, Ohio, group will have Tom Julien share today.
Charles Ashman will be the special guest speaker for the New Holland, Pennsylvania, day Away April 20th. Charles has been a Grace Brethren pastor since 1950, he served in the Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church for 27 years. Since his retirement in 1989 from that pastorate, he continues to be active in pulpit supply, retreats, Bible conferences and special church evaluation ministries. He is now coordinating the Paraclete ministry in the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches, providing valuable help to churches in transition.

Hmmm...3 Keys to Closing Your Back Door--Edited by Andy Wirt |
| All of us have “back doors” to our church where people leave, fall through the cracks, and never return. How can we close our back door and help people assimilate?
- Focus on friendship and caring. The number one reason people remain in a church is because they have developed friendships. Create opportunities for people to meet and make friends.
- Help people find a place to belong. Develop a system for moving people from your worship celebration to your membership classes, small groups, or ABFs. Make it very clear to a newcomer how he or she can become involved, join, serve, find a small group family, etc.
- Involve new people in ministry as quickly as possible. When people new to your church feel appreciated because of their gifts or interests, they are drawn to your church. Try to use newcomers in low stress, low responsibility areas (greeter ministry, food preparation, etc.).

What I have Learned About Generation Y... |
...From USC Football Coach Pete Carroll
by Bob Hetzler
The other day a friend and I went to USC and watched the football team’s spring practice. I’ve been a Trojan fan ever since Bobby Chandler caught the winning touchdown pass against Michigan in the 70’ Rose Bowl game (hey, some things never change). What I love about spring practice is all the energy and excitement that every new season brings. Watching these players on the field, you see that they really love to play the game. It’s still fun for them and they don’t seem as jaded as the pros. Also, and this might be a surprise to you, but I learned some things. Read more...
