Why Memorize Scripture by Rick Warren
In order to encourage scripture memorization, CE National is providing ideas for a church, Sunday School class, or small group to encourage groups to memorize at least one verse a month.
Taken from the Bible 100 Challenge (outlined below), a list of suggested verses are here. You may want to give these weekly to your group, post in a bulletin, put on a Power Point, share with your class or small group, etc.
For young people there is a program called Bible Quizzing. If your church does not have a quiz team and you would like to know how to start one, please go to the Bible Quizzing page.
Here is material to encourage you to memorize 100 Bible verses over the next year. The list of verses is in brochure format to help you and your church learn answers to questions that come up in the Christian walk. There are also helps included in a brochure that will aid people in scripture memory. These brochures are free for the asking. Contact Peggy at resources@cenational.org.
To give you an easy way to keep the verses available, we have booklets that contain the NIV verses. These booklets are available at a minimal charge of $1 each. It is also possible to print a copy of the verses.
We are keenly aware that today's average church attendee is lacking in the area of Biblical literacy. This comes from shifts in lifestyle, changes in the way we "do" church and even in the current discipleship trends; all these things being good in themselves but they may not foster Biblical literacy. We hope that this challenge to memorize 2 passages a week in a year will give people the "taste" for God's Word that will grow into a deep love relationship with the Bible and Christ.
Why should you memorize Scripture?
- It keeps us from sin (Psa. 119:11)
- God wants us to meditate on the Word (Joshua 1:7-8)
- It will give you direction for your life (Psa. 119:105)
- It is how Jesus overcame temptation (Matt. 4:1-11)
- Your prayer life will be strengthened (2 Cor. 10:3-6)
- Your outlook will change (Heb. 4:12)
- Your witnessing will be more effective (Col. 3:16)
- It’s a way to give counsel and encouragement to others (Prov. 25:11)
- It will improve your speech (Matt. 12:34)
- It makes our faith in Christ stronger (1 Samuel 3:21)
- It teaches us right from wrong (Heb. 5:13-14)
- It is God’s Word and is totally true and reliable (Psa. 12:7)
- It’s how a believer sends Satan away (Matt. 4:1-11)
